Becoming is Deanna’s process of dissociating from her absent father while highlighting the presence of her mother and her supportive family. She emphasizes the pieces of her life that led her towards the decision to legally change her name. Old family photos are paired with new portraits of her large family using various materials to enhance the intimate story. Deanna finds inspiration in the personal relationships she creates with those closest to her, and will continue to grow this series as a “thank you” to all of them, while addressing the irresponsible behavior of absent parents.
